Adobe Illustrator: Postage Stamps

This was a really exciting project that is near and dear to my heart. This project is six of seven in the course, and it started out by walking me through the process of designing postage stamps. Given a list of causes, I chose the “Wounded Warrior Project”.

I had to first identify two key fact about the cause after researching it. However, my key facts come from my personal experiences as a registered Wounded Warrior Program member.

  • The Wounded Warrior Project also known as WWP, is a nonprofit organization that supports and serves those who have served (veterans) our country honorably and those who still serve.
  • Some support services that the WWP offers veterans and service members include: lobbying the state Capitol for needed resources and benefits that those of us who have serviced this nation deserve; sponsored fun events (like NFL game tickets) for veterans to take part in to help them relax, have fun, reduce stress, and connect with other fellow veterans (in-person and also virtual events); mental health professionals that are there to help those veterans in need; job training and employment help, and so much more.

The 2 themes that I chose are Honor and Support, because this is what the Wounded Warrior Project does for its service connected veterans and active duty service members. To be a part of WWP, you have to have proof that you have a service connected disability.

Postage Stamps: Comps

The criteria to create 4 precisely rendered vector comps were:

  • 4 stamps must be part of a continuous design showcasing a specific theme
  • visually, stamps must be cohesive when viewed alone and as a whole design element
  • stamps should reside in a 2″x2” square, or a 1.75″x2” rectangle (portrait or landscape)
  • precisely rendered in Illustrator
  • utilize a consistent color scheme
  • Include the required text
    • USA
    • Forever (or First Class)
    • Name of your Cause
  • ensure that all 4 of your postage stamp vector comps are on the same 8.5″ x 11″ page in Illustrator

Postage Stamps: Final Presentation

I changed the stamp with the three women into a silhouette to make them stand out more. I also adjusted the flags to have smaller line sections and made the blue part slightly bigger. I also gave all four stamps the flag background.

I do think this would be a successful design to raise awareness and funds for this cause, because I have not seen a stamp for this great cause, and neither have I seen any that showed support for women veterans/service members.
